At St. Mary's we are blessed with a diversity of worship styles
which are expressed in our Sunday liturgies. Both Sunday services
(8:00 and 10:30) are the Holy Eucharist, Rite II, from the Book of
Common Prayer. The Scripture readings are from the Revised Common
Lectionary.
The
early service, at 8:00 a.m., is a said service (no music). The
worshiping community at this service usually numbers 15 to 25 - a
small, friendly group that is welcoming, but not intrusive. The
service usually lasts about 40 minutes. There is a monthly Coffee Hour
following this service, usually on the first Sunday in the month, in
which we share wonderful food and conversation together (these dates
are noted on our online calendar). Even on Coffee Hour days, our time
together is concluded early, allowing plenty of time to enjoy our many
local and area activities.
The
later service, at 10:30 a.m., is a sung service. Portions of the
liturgy are sung, usually the Entrance, Gradual, Offertory, Sursum
Corda, Sanctus, post-Communion, and the Recessional. Music styles used
include traditional hymns, praise music (often called "Cursillo
music"), and Taizé music (a meditative form of singing originating from
the ecumenical Taizé services founded in France in the 1950's). Hymns
are taken from the 1982 Hymnal. Other music is found in a Glory and
Praise music folder.
Most
of the time our music offering is a capella and we are graced with
people who sing and harmonize well. We are currently working to build
and expand our music ministry to also include instruments (possibly
piano, guitar, mandolin, recorders, and percussion).
The
worshiping community at this service varies according to the season -
we are a tourist destination, but usually numbers 35 to 55. This
service ordinarily lasts about 50 minutes. On the third Sunday of
every month this service includes healing with anointing of oil. On
these Sundays our service extends to about an hour.
There
is a Coffee Hour following each 10:30 service where we enjoy wonderful
refreshments and pleasant conversation together. We catch up, dream
dreams together, and enjoy the energy and joyful exuberance of our
children and youth, the wisdom of our elders, and the opportunity to
just sit and be together.
This
service allows the double benefit of sleeping in and still having
enough time to have lunch in town or enjoy the local and area
activities – all while still making room in our lives for participating
in lively and meaningful worship.
Join us on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. for a meditative Taizé service. A variety of services is offered seasonally including Evensong, A Public Service of Healing, a Service of Light, and Lessons & Carols during Advent; Stations of the Cross, Ash Wednesday, Tenebrae, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday services in Lent, a Rogation Day procession and service at our Organic Community Garden; and a blessing of the animals on the Feast of St. Francis. Watch our homepage for announcements about these services.
